Explained briefly
Vollkasko
Damage to your own car when it is your fault, or when someone unknown damages it and you have no other insurer to claim from.
Teilkasko
Theft of the whole car or of parts, glass, storms, animals.
Haftpflicht
Required by law. Pays for damage you cause to others.
Each level includes the one before: Teilkasko includes Haftpflicht, Vollkasko includes everything.
What to watch out for
- 30.11. – cancel by then to switch on 1.1. After that you are tied in for another year.
- A premium increase gives you a special right to cancel – usually within one month of the letter.

Frequently asked questions
What is the eVB number?
The electronic proof of insurance (elektronische Versicherungsbestätigung). You need it at the Zulassungsstelle (vehicle registration office) – your insurer gives it to you before the appointment.
What is the SF-Klasse?
Your years without a reported claim. Each claim-free year lowers your premium, and you take the class with you to a new insurer.
First car – why so expensive?
Without an SF-Klasse you start at zero. Your parents' second car or a transfer of their class can help – under certain conditions.
Which documents do I need?
Fahrzeugschein (vehicle registration certificate), driving licence and, if you were insured before, the details of your old insurance.
